The Newlywed Diary

In It’s Entirety – all 390 words

Intro by Greg, the Diary by Trenna

Introduction

Today I was looking for a different piece of Trenna history, when I stumbled across a lovely hard cover book I hadn’t seen for some time.

It was bought at Myer (department store) for $15 (which sounds to me like a lot of money, considering it was in 1989). It comprises 100 or so blank pages.

The very first page has Trenna’s writing on both sides, and that is what I have reproduced below. I’m pretty sure she thought she would make a diary of her married life.

The diary.

I’d say she didn’t quite have the knack, or the time to do it. She only ever wrote 390 words in it.

I’m sure that at that stage she had no perception of the wealth of material she would eventually leave behind.

The Diary

Wednesday, 25 October 1989 – Already more than two full days of married life have passed.

Our wedding day was a delight.

The weather was absolutely beautiful. Approximately 26 degrees, sunny and clear. The Registry ceremony was brief but personal, well worth the $75 that Greg and I had invested.

Rellies and friends mixed happily and everyone was eager to take photos of everyone else (provided Greg and I were in it).

The Irwin Restaurant proved to be a resounding success. Bread rolls of every shape and bake were plentiful to the extreme. Chardonnay and Hermitage filled the glasses for the duration of the meal.

Mr and Mrs Mahney, that is my husband and I, did neglect to introduce everyone, however this didn’t in any way hinder everybody from chatting to one another.

12.35pm Towards the start of lunch. The Irwin Restaurant, which was immediately below the Registrar’s office had never hosted a wedding.

The bill for the meal was $614. We tipped them to bring the final cost to $630. For this we had a choice of two entrees, half a dozen main courses, two sweets or cheeseboard, coffee/tea and chockies. Plenty of wine, beer, soft drinks and a round of ports for 17 hungry folk.

The management of the Irwin gave Greg and I a beautiful Bouquet of flowers, and chocolate hearts. We opened some pressies at the Irwin. We stayed until about 4 o’clock then caught a taxi to the Parmelia Hilton.

Sunday 5 November 1989 – the day before Greg and I return to our respective jobs, after enjoying four weeks of annual leave.

Today we watched the Australian Grand Prix on TV. Controversy or what?! Prost refused to race because the weather was too wet and everyone was slipping all over the place. The race was postponed but did go on with no major dramas. [Thierry] Boutsen won. There were only a handful of cars left in the end.

Immediately after our wedding we stayed for one night in the Parmelia. We paid $199 for a small suite, however due to the airline dispute we were given a large suite which was $100 more (for no extra). It was pretty specky. Mind you, Greg was a slight touch pissed, perhaps a little too pissed to really enjoy the room. Oh well!

Tuesday we drove down to Mandurah and stayed until Friday. It was most restful (the unofficial honeymoon). Friday arvo we drove to Dwellingup and set up camp.
